Chapter 22

Don’t Lie to Me

Caroline and I talked with Brad to see if he was able to get Rachel into a local rehab clinic. I hated seeing my friend so tormented, but she knew it was for her own good. I promised to be with her every step of the way during her in processing. After Rachel was admitted into rehab, I headed back to Caroline’s. Prez and I were in the process of packing when I started to zone out. So many thoughts were running through my head that I didn’t know where to begin in my search for the truth. I was staring off into space when Prez grabbed hold of my hand.

“Hey. Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just trying to wrap my head around everything that has happened. That’s all.”

“I know it’s a lot to deal with, but everything is going to be alright. Okay.”

“Okay. So, are you ready to go?”

“Yes. Wait a minute. What about Olivia? You have all of her things?”

“Yes. I don’t know what Caroline was thinking when she bought all this stuff. Shoes, clothes, toys…I had to buy an extra suitcase just so we could carry it all back.”

“Hey, don’t be hard on her. She’s just excited about having a niece. I’m sure you were the same way when you found out about JJ.”

“Yeah, five years later but, hey, the past is the past, right? So where is Olivia anyway?”

“She’s with Caroline.”

“Alright. Well, I’m all done. You ready to go?”

“Ready.”

We headed downstairs and, to my surprise, my father was there, and Caroline was standing beside him with Olivia in her arms.

“Dad. What are you doing here?”

“I heard you were leaving today, and I couldn’t allow you to go without saying good-bye first.”

I was stunned. I didn’t know what to think. I looked around for my mother, but I didn’t see her. “So, I guess mom didn’t come with you.”

“She couldn’t make it. You know your mother.”

“No. I use to know my mother, but anyway. I’m glad you’re here.”

“You know I couldn’t miss seeing you off, and, about the other day, I’m sorry. Your mother has been through a lot, and well, just give her some time.”

“I would if I knew what I was giving her time for, but I don’t. She had it in for me the moment I returned home, and no one has yet to tell me why.”

“Sit down.” I placed my luggage in a corner, and I sat down on the couch beside my father. “Can you guys give us a moment alone?” Caroline and Prez left the room, and they took Olivia with them. “Okay, when Caroline would go and visit with your mother in prison, it wasn’t hard for her to figure out that Caroline was using. She never said anything to Caroline about it; she just hoped and prayed that Caroline would eventually kick her habit. Then, soon after our release, we were informed of your arrest. Your mother was so hurt, and she felt as though you were the one responsible for Caroline’s addiction.
